A new study released last month illustrates that there has been a decrease of abortions among younger women and teenagers and an increase of abortions among older women.
The study by the Guttmacher Institute, a private nonprofit reproductive health research organization, is the first comprehensive analysis of abortion demographic characteristics since 1974. Researches found that abortion rates are at their lowest now with an overall drop of 33 percent.
Deborah McCoy, director of the University of California, Riverside Campus Health Center, said she did not think that the study fit the normal trends of what she sees on campus.
While the UCR Campus Health Center only refer to doctors who will perform abortions and does not conduct them, McCoy said that she was surprised to hear that the number of older women conducting abortions was on the rise, as she had always thought it was considerably higher among young women and teenagers.
Kathleen Ibarra, a third year political science major, shared the same sentiments. "It's pretty unbelievable. I thought the teenagers would have more abortions," said Ibarra.
Rachel Jones, a senior research associate at the Guttmacher Institute agreed with Ibarra's assumption.
In an article by the Washington Post, Jones was quoted as saying that the efforts to decline unintended pregnancy should not only be focused on teenagers and young women, but also "among all women."
"The face of women getting abortions has greatly changed in the last 30 years, she it's time that policy-makers realize that," Jones said.
